Our
Church’s Roots:
Martin Luther
was a monk and university professor living in Germany during the late
15th and early 16th centuries.
He became troubled with many practices of the church, especially
teachings that said people had to perform many works and ceremonies
to go to heaven.
Luther believed that people were saved by God’s grace alone.
(Romans 3:21-26)
He began to resist the church’s teachings.
The controversy his resistance caused set in motion the events
that have come be known as the Protestant Reformation.
In a few
short decades, the church had splintered into many different groups.
Those groups, who were most closely associated with Luther, came
to be called “Lutherans.”
It was a derogatory name at first and our church has never shaken
it.
While the centuries have passed, we still keep at the core of
our beliefs that we are saved only by God’s grace through faith.
